We hear it all the time: "There's no cure for tinnitus, so what exactly are you offering?" It's a fair question, and one we get asked constantly, often by people who've been living with tinnitus for years and have simply been told to "learn to live with it."
So let's answer it properly.
Is There Really No Cure for Tinnitus?
Yes – and we've never claimed otherwise. Tinnitus can't be cured, in the same way a common cold can't technically be cured. But just as you can treat a cold and feel better within days, tinnitus can be treated too. The ringing, buzzing or whistling sound doesn't have to stay at full volume forever.
At Regain Hearing, our approach is to identify what's driving your tinnitus, target it using sound-based technology, and reduce it – sometimes right down to the point where you barely notice it at all. That's not a cure. It's a genuine, measurable improvement in your day-to-day life, and for many of our patients, that's more than enough.
If It Can't Be Cured, What Does "Treating" Tinnitus Actually Mean?
This is where the confusion usually starts. Plenty of people assume that if there's no cure, there's nothing to be done except grit your teeth and get on with it. That simply isn't true.
Using sophisticated sound engineering – not unlike the principles behind noise-cancelling technology – we assess exactly how your hearing and your tinnitus interact, then apply carefully calibrated sound therapy to dial the noise down. For some patients that means their tinnitus is reduced by half. For others, it's brought down to the point where it's barely perceptible. Either way, it's a real, tangible shift from where they started.
My Doctor Told Me Nothing Can Be Done – So How Are You Different?
This isn't a criticism of GPs or ENT specialists – it's simply that conventional medicine doesn't have a tool for tinnitus beyond counselling or sleep therapy advice. There's no pill, and there's no operation, so from a medical standpoint, that genuinely is often the limit of what can be offered.
Audiology is a different discipline. We use specialist equipment and computer-based sound analysis to actually locate and target the specific characteristics of your tinnitus, then apply sound therapy designed around your hearing. It's a technology-led approach that most medical professionals simply don't have access to – which is exactly why so many patients are told "nothing can be done" before they ever speak to an audiologist.
I've Had Tinnitus for Decades. Is It Too Late for Me?
Not at all. Whether your tinnitus started 3 to 6 months ago or you've been living with it for thirty years, the approach is the same: we look at what's likely causing it – noise exposure, medication, a hereditary factor, or something else entirely – and work out whether it can be targeted.
The one exception is very recent onset: if your tinnitus has only been present for a few days, it may well settle on its own, and we'd say as much. But for anything longer-standing, there's no reason a client’s age or how long they’ve had it should rule out an assessment. If we can help, we'll say so – and if we genuinely can't, we'll tell you that too.
Is This Just Sales Talk? How Do I Know It Isn't "Snake Oil"?
It's a question we're happy to be asked, because it's easy to check. We don't sell potions, tablets, or vague promises – our tinnitus assessment costs nothing, so there's no financial incentive to tell someone we can help when we can't.
We're also not a small, unproven outfit. Regain Hearing has over 3,000 verified reviews across our clinics and 24 members of staff, built up over years of practice. If patients were paying for assessments and treatments that didn't work, with no refunds available, that pattern would show up clearly in public reviews. Instead, among the hearing aid and ear wax removal feedback, you'll find genuine testimonials from tinnitus patients who've had real results. That's not something you can manufacture – either someone's tinnitus has improved, or it hasn't.
How Much Does a Tinnitus Assessment Cost?
Nothing. We offer a free assessment, which typically takes around 15–20 minutes, purely to establish whether we can help you. There's no obligation to go further, and if a fuller consultation is recommended afterwards, that's entirely your decision.
Given there's no cost and no commitment attached, our advice is usually simple: if you're living with tinnitus and wondering whether anything can be done, the only way to find out for certain is to come in and let us take a proper look.
A Note from Our Audiologist
"So many of our patients have already been told there's nothing to be done, often by well-meaning professionals who simply don't have the tools we do. We can't cure tinnitus – no one can – but with the right sound-based approach, we can very often reduce it significantly, and sometimes to the point where it's no longer noticeable day to day. That difference matters enormously to the people we treat, and it's why we'd always encourage anyone struggling with tinnitus to come in and find out what's possible, rather than assume nothing can be done." - Lee Fletcher, Regain Hearing (RHAD), (BSHAA), FdA
