Confused About Your Tinnitus? Here's How an Assessment Can Finally Give You Answers

If you've been living with tinnitus for any length of time, you've probably heard some version of the same sentence: "There's no cure, I'm afraid. You'll just have to learn to live with it." Maybe it came from your GP. Maybe your ENT specialist said it after a five-minute chat. Either way, it tends to leave people with more questions than answers.

What actually is this ringing, buzzing or hissing you're hearing? Why does it get worse some days and barely register on others? And if nothing can be done, why do some people say their tinnitus has all but disappeared?

A tinnitus assessment won't hand you a magic cure because, as our audiologist Lee Fletcher is always clear about, one doesn't exist. What it will do is help you actually understand what's going on in your ears, why it's happening, and whether it can be reduced. For most people, that understanding is the part that's been missing all along.

If There's No Cure, What's the Point of an Assessment?

It's worth clearing this up early, because it's the question we get asked more than any other: no, tinnitus cannot be cured. But it can be treated, and treatment starts with understanding.

Think of it a bit like a cold. You can't cure a cold, but you can absolutely treat the symptoms and make it far more bearable. Tinnitus works the same way. Once we've had a proper look at your hearing and identified what's driving your tinnitus, we can target it and, in a lot of cases, reduce it right down — sometimes to the point where our patients tell us they barely notice it anymore.

None of that is possible without an assessment first. You can't treat what you haven't measured, and a five-minute conversation with a GP simply isn't built to dig into the detail the way a full hearing and tinnitus assessment is.

What Actually Happens at a Tinnitus Assessment?

This is where a lot of people are pleasantly surprised. A tinnitus assessment isn’t simply a case of being asked, “Have you tried counselling?” There’s a lot more to understanding your tinnitus.

Our Free Tinnitus Assessment takes around 15–20 minutes and is designed as a starting point. It gives us the opportunity to listen to what you’re experiencing, understand the basics of your tinnitus and hearing, and establish whether further investigation would be helpful.

During the free assessment, we’ll:

  • Take an initial history of your tinnitus — when it started, what it sounds like and whether it changes

  • Discuss your hearing and any symptoms you may be experiencing

  • Carry out appropriate initial hearing checks

  • Explain what we can establish from the assessment in straightforward language

  • Talk through what the next steps could look like, if further investigation is needed

Importantly, we won’t try to cram a complete tinnitus investigation into 15 minutes.

A full tinnitus consultation is much more detailed. Depending on what we find during your free assessment, this may involve a more comprehensive hearing assessment, detailed tinnitus characterisation using specialist sound engineering technology, and a deeper look at the factors that could be contributing to or maintaining your tinnitus.

The free assessment is therefore the starting point, not the whole journey.

By the end of those first 15–20 minutes, you should have a better understanding of what may be going on and, most importantly, whether a full consultation could be worthwhile.

There’s no pressure to continue. We’ll simply explain what we’ve found and give you the information you need to decide what you’d like to do next.

Why "How Long Have You Had It" Isn't the Only Question That Matters

One of the most common things we hear from new patients is some version of "I've had this for 30 years, there's nothing anyone can do." It's an understandable assumption, but it isn't quite right. Whether your tinnitus started last week or three decades ago, the same principle applies: if we can identify what's behind it, there's a good chance we can help.

Noise damage, medication side effects, hereditary factors, age-related hearing changes, there are a number of possible causes, and an assessment is how we work out which one (or combination) applies to you. That's the whole point of understanding your condition properly, rather than being told to simply live with it.

Is the Assessment Really Free?

Yes. There's no catch, and it isn't a sales tactic dressed up as an assessment. It's a genuine, no-obligation way to find out whether we can help before you spend a penny. If it turns out a full consultation would benefit you, that's your decision to make afterwards, not ours to push.

It's also worth saying: we wouldn't be able to build the reputation we have (Over 3,000 reviews across our clinics) if people walked away feeling misled. If an assessment didn't help people, that would show up in reviews fairly quickly. It hasn't, because it does.

A Note from Our Audiologist

"I completely understand why people are sceptical when they've been told for years that nothing can be done. But there's a real difference between curing tinnitus and treating it. Using sound engineering technology, we can identify exactly what's happening with your hearing and target it directly, something a GP simply doesn't have the tools to do. An assessment isn't about selling anything. It's about finally giving people a clear, honest answer about their own condition."
