Why Is Ear Protection Important?

Our ears are highly sensitive, and too much exposure to loud noises can cause long-term hearing damage. The problem is, once the damage is done, it can’t be reversed.

But how does sound work, and how much of it is too much?

Noise levels are measured in decibels, and the higher the decibels, the louder the noise and the more likely it is to damage your ears. It’s generally accepted that noise damage can start when you’re exposed to around 85 decibels of sound, but what does that look like in real terms?

You might be surprised just how loud some sounds are. When you mow your grass, your lawnmower gives out around 85 decibels of sound. When you use a food blender, that goes up to 90, and if you’re using a hand drill, you can expect to be exposed to around 100 decibels of sound. Even walking down a busy street can expose you to between 78 and 85 decibels.

It’s impossible to completely avoid sound, but fortunately, you don’t have to. Hearing damage only begins when an individual is exposed to 85 decibels of sound for eight hours, but the louder the sound, the shorter the time before it can start damaging your ears. This is good news for most of us — going shopping for a couple of hours, using a drill to hang up a picture or mowing the lawn for an hour aren’t going to cause long-term hearing damage.

But some of us are regularly exposed to loud sounds. If you work on a construction site, in a factory or even as a musician, you could be being exposed to upwards of 100 decibels of sound every day. Over the short term, you might experience the occasional ringing in the ears (tinnitus), but over time, it can have a significant impact on your hearing and leave you with partial hearing loss.

Once this damage is done, you can regain your sound through using hearing aids, but there’s no way to permanently reverse it. That being said, there are preventative measures you can take now to reduce your exposure to loud noise and the impact it has on your hearing.
