Why Have a Hearing Test?

If you have any kind of hearing loss or ear-related pain or discomfort, a hearing test is vital to determine what’s wrong, how severe it is and what can be done to remedy it.

If hearing loss is caused by a buildup of earwax, it can be fixed easily with an earwax removal method, such as microsuction. It might be that you work in a noisy environment that could cause irreversible hearing damage if you don’t take preventative action soon. In this case, we can recommend custom ear plugs to protect your hearing. On the other hand, you may have been suffering hearing loss or enduring a constant buzzing in your ears for some time. In these cases, it may not be possible to reverse the damage or deterioration, but we can provide treatments, such as having a hearing aid fitted, that can allow you to hear properly again and enjoy conversations with your loved ones.

Hearing Test Reception

What Happens During Your Hearing Test?

At Regain Hearing, we offer among the most comprehensive hearing tests available at ear clinics. Whether you go to our practices in Northfleet, Eltham or Broadstairs or ask us to come to your home, you’ll receive the same quality of service.

But what will happen during your hearing test, and what can you expect?

Otoscopy by Lee Fletcher
Video Otoscopy

It might sound fancy, and that’s because it’s one of the newest and most innovative advances in audiology technology. In recent years, when you went for a hearing test, your audiologist might have just looked into your ear using an otoscope — that device inserted into your ear to see down your ear canal. The problem with this is that it gives your audiologist a very narrow viewing window, and you can’t see what’s going on!

A video otoscopy involves inserting a tiny fibre-optic camera down your ear canal. This isn’t painful, invasive or uncomfortable — in fact, it’s no different to having your ears looked at with a traditional otoscope. The big difference is that you and your audiologist can clearly see down your ear canal on a high-definition screen. This allows our audiologists to clearly show you exactly what the problem is and identify what’s causing it. If your ear canal is swollen and you have a buildup of earwax, your audiologist will be able to clearly show you — because you’ll be able to see it too.

Speech Mapping

Everyone’s ears are unique. Your ear canal might be bigger or smaller, your ear may droop upwards or downwards and they will process sound differently to the person sitting next to you. This means that there is no one-size-fits-all hearing solution.

If you use a hearing aid, it’s important that it’s programmed to your unique needs and the way your ears process sound. With speech mapping, we can measure how you hear amplified speech through your hearing aids and make adjustments accordingly. This means we can make small changes that reduce excessive background noise or improve how sound is amplified from different directions and sources to improve the quality and clarity of sound you hear when wearing your hearing aids.

Tympanometry
Ear Pressure Testing

Ear pressure testing, or tympanometry, is a hearing exam that checks the condition of your middle ear and how your eardrum responds. The middle ear plays a vital role in how we interpret sounds, as it transfers sound vibrations to the inner ear, which are then sent to the brain and result in the sounds we hear.

An ear pressure test can indicate to your audiologist whether you have fluid in your middle ear or an infection, or if there’s a tear in your eardrum. Using these results, your audiologist can effectively diagnose the cause of your hearing loss or pain and recommend a suitable treatment. The procedure itself is completely risk-free and takes no longer than a couple of minutes per ear. Your audiologist will begin by inserting a flexible rubber tip into your ear. You may hear low-pitched tones as the device takes measurements. By varying the air pressure in your ear, your audiologist can move the eardrum back and forth to help determine or rule out potential causes of your hearing loss. Tympanometry isn’t painful, but you may feel slight discomfort, similar to that of taking off on an aeroplane when the pressure shifts.

If you’ve recently been struggling to hear, earache has been giving you grief or you’ve noticed your hearing has gradually worsened over time, a hearing test can be the first step to better conversations and clear sound. Take your first step with the leading audiologists in London and Kent today.

Word List Tests

Many hearing tests involve playing tones through headphones and testing your reaction to identify the pitch and volume you can hear. But in the real world, we communicate via speech, each word with its own nuance. Our word list tests provide an accurate and clever diagnosis that gives our audiologists valuable insight into how we can help improve how you hear conversations.

Hearing Loss Simulator

If your friend, partner or family member has hearing loss, it can be frustrating not being able to communicate the way you used to, but experiencing exactly how they hear sound on a daily basis can help you understand what it’s like — it’s just as frustrating for them, if not more so!

We first test your partner or loved one’s hearing. We then play this through calibrated speakers, simulating the exact experience so that you can listen to how things sound in their world.

At Regain Hearing, we take the time to test your hearing and diagnose your hearing loss carefully. We do this at a forensic level to ensure we can recommend the best hearing treatment for you. Whether we diagnose you with a blocked ear that requires microsuction or recommend making changes to your hearing aid so that it’s programmed more effectively, you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands with our caring and experienced audiologists.
